In this interview
did with , Pete says something I wish we heard more often from Democrats—not just opposition to Trump, but a vision for how things could actually work better for all of us.When questioned about the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI), Buttigieg expresses interest in ensuring that the American people benefit from the value created by publicly funded research and development. He says, “I’m more interested in dealing the American people in on the value being created with IP the American taxpayer is paying for," referencing innovations like the Internet and AI.
Let that sink in. That includes the Internet. AI. Even pharmaceutical breakthroughs. We, the people, paid for the research, the risk, the infrastructure. But the profits? They flow up to private companies. Pete’s asking: Why shouldn’t we get a cut?
It’s a bold idea, and it echoes something movements like Andrew Yang’s Freedom Dividend or UBI have been circling around for years: If we’re footing the bill for the foundation of innovation, maybe we should share in the returns.
This isn’t just economic policy—it’s narrative. It’s a story where the American people aren’t just workers or voters or consumers. We’re stakeholders in the future. And although I didn’t endorse everything Pete had to say, if Democrats want to win hearts, not just arguments, they need more of this narrative.
That’s on shared prosperity.
That’s on reclaiming the future.
That’s On Facts.
